Explanations in French (toute l'île) (on appelait sahy rano : capables d'affronter l'eau, les colorants de grand teint qui ne déteignaient pas au lavage. C'est probablement l'origine de ce nom). Bixa orellana L. (Bixaceae). Arbuste d'origine américaine, introduit à Madagascar pour ses graines qui fournissent une matière colorante rouge bien connue, le roucou. C'était aussi le colorant utilisé par les Améridiens (« Peaux-Rouges ») pour leurs peintures corporelles. D'après une autre tradition (côte Est), les graines auraient été administrées aux taureaux de combat comme stimulant, pour accroître leur agréssivité (de sahy (adjectif) : hardi, courageux). L'une et l'autre version sont également plausibles. Mais le pouvoir excitant des graines n'a jamais été scientifiquement vérifié à notre connaissance. [1.196]
