Explanations in French  [Mahafaly] (de atatra : tomber raide mort ; allusion à la toxicité bien connue des graines). Jatropha mahafalensis Jum. & H.Perrier (Euphorbiaceae). Nom malgache relevé par H. Poisson in herbier n° 712. Graines oléagineuses fournissant une huile employée pour l'éclairage ou la fabrication de savon à la mode malgache. L'espèce est spontanée aux environs de Tuléar, mais on la plante parfois aussi pour faire des clôtures à la manière du Pignon d'Inde introduit, Jatropha curcas L. Notons qu'une autre espèce de jatropha, Jatropha multifida L. a été introduite et est parfois cultivée dans les jardins des régions côtières sur le nom de « Manioc à fleurs ».
